It took centuries for the game of Blackjack, or “twenty-one”, to make its way to North America and become the popular casino card game that it is today. However, recent decades have shown huge developments for the game. In the last several decades the game of Blackjack has picked up speed with new variations and the development of online casinos.
The reason that Blackjack became so popular is that Nevada casinos in 1931 began offering a special 10 to 1 payout for players obtaining 21-point hands made up of a Black Jack and the Ace of Spades. Although this payout no longer exists, casinos took the rest of the 20th century to come up with new interesting rules and payouts to attract players. Today’s casinos typically offer a 3 to 2 payout for “Blackjack”, though some casinos offer a payout of 6 to 5.
New Blackjack variations that have been developed and gained popularity over the past few decades are numerous. The number of decks, payouts, dealer rules, and regulations concerning doubling down, splitting and insurance differ from game to game. Some of the most popular blackjack casino games today include Vegas Strip Blackjack, Vegas Downtown Blackjack, Atlantic City Blackjack, European Blackjack, Single Deck and Multi-Deck Blackjack, Spanish 21 and Pontoon.
The advent of the Internet has also led to new trends in the world of Blackjack gaming. Now, with online casinos, blackjack enthusiasts can play online for free or for real money. There are a large number of online casinos that offer a variety of blackjack games that can be played from home, rather than from a brick and mortar casino.
Additionally, in the last few years Blackjack has become more and more popular in pop culture. Movies like 21, the true story of a group of MIT students who head to Vegas to count cards and win hundreds of thousands of dollars, have more and more people learning about Blackjack and starting to play. Who can tell where the future of Blackjack will go from here!
